This Week’s 10 Most Talked About Viral Videos

Another week and another set of brilliant viral videos that has got lots of people talking. Rather than sifting through the billions of videos that people have uploaded, I share the ten best virals every week form the world of marketing and advertising. This week, I have a couple of classics from brands like Coke Zero and Google as well as a great Lego recreation of last week’s big Red Bull stunt. Sit back and go full screen and enjoy this weeks classics.

Which Blends Better? iPhone 5 Or Samsung Galaxy SIII

The iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S III have been going head to head in all sorts of battles, but the latest is probably the funniest so far as we get to find out which one blends best.

Brilliant Skyfall Promo Sees Commuters Racing Against The Clock For Tickets

Filmed in Antwerp central station, commuters who wanted a Coke Zero were given the chance to win tickets to see the new Bond film Skyfall. However, once they entered their name, they were given 70 seconds to collect the tickets at the other side of the station. What ensues is a mad rush filled with obstacles as they sprint to platform 6 to get the ticket. Brilliant!

Shoe Brand Launches Brilliant Real World Instagram Campaign

With over 100 million users, brands were always going to start embracing Instagram and we’re seeing campaigns come along in all shapes and sizes. We love this one because it combines the real world with the online world and gives ladies free shoes. A winner all round.

Star Wars Themed Flash Mob

Flash mobs always get much attention online and when you combine them with a choir playing the theme to Star Wars, you know you will have a massive hit on your hands.

Some of the best footage from around the world these days is shot on GoPro cameras and the good news is that they have just released their latest version along with this stunning video shot entirely on the GoPro Hero 3.

Have you ever been in a restaurant ordering food and not been sure what to choose? Well, one innovative dining establishment has come up with an innovative solution that allows users to tag their photos.
It creates the world’s first Instagram menu thus leaving stunning images for future diners to browse through. Very smart indeed and we predict we’ll be seeing this in many other restaurants pretty soon.

Dive Into The Great Barrier Reef Thanks To Google+ Hangouts

Google+ has plenty of critics (including ourselves), but it’s never short of some good marketing material. This video – showing how their hangouts product is being used by divers on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef – is incredibly smart. Just a shame that nobody is on the service to actually see it.

Infographic: 1 Billion Facebook Users

Just 4 years ago, in 2008, Facebook had just 100 million users, last week we saw the release of their first ever ad campaign,Things That Connect Us celebrating the billion fan milestone. Here’s a nice infographic that summarizes some of the facts behind this extraordinary platform:

  • There have been 140.3 billion friend connections
  • 219 billion photos have been uploaded onto Facebook
  • The Facebook “like” button has been hit 1.13 trillion times
  • 62.6 billion songs have been played
  • The average age of a Facebook user is 22 years
  • Facebook now has 600 million mobile users

These are some pretty impressive numbers. With just over 6 billion people left to sign up, what does the future hold for Facebook?

Nissan Altima: Water Projection Mapping Event

Nissan Canada have launched a multi-city water projection mapping event campaign to celebrate the new 2013 Nissan Altima, strategically timed with the Canada Day holiday. The 3D projecting mapping installation was experienced on a 120ft water wall pumped with 3300 liters of water per minute into the air to create the perfect screen for the film to be played on in front of tens of thousands of people at each of the locations across Canada. Created by Thinkingbox and Newad.

Redbull: Human Powered Freerunning Machine

Here’s the latest piece of content from Redbull’s Parkour sponsorship of Jason Paul, this time, they've setup what’s been named a ‘Human Powered Freerunning Machine’… Which from my decryption is an engineered environmental dominos setup that sees Jason Paul run through various contraptions to the finish line. The video has racked up 5 million views in just a few days and to be honest, with those numbers and a great name, I was expecting something super cool. It is cool, but I’m not sure I got the wow factor… It felt a little bit under engineered compared to other similar styled videos and a just lacked that punch for me. What did you guys think?

Google: Chromebook for everyone

This ad isn't just shared because it’s a Google commercial. But because it’s a damn good commercial. They are playing just the right cards to show people everyone can use the new Google Chromebook. And besides all that it’s just pure and simple fun.

LG: So real it’s crazy

To introduce LG IPS monitor and the quality of its colors, LG created a scary experience in an elevator. The team replaced the floor with monitors. Each time a person entered, weird noises could be heard and the floor literally fell into pieces. So real it’s crazy!

What Are the Hottest Soft Drink Brands in Social Media?

Taken from http://www.mashable.com

Red Bull dominated this week’s chart of soft drink brands with the highest social media engagement. You can probably guess why.

According to Starcount, the data aggregator which tracks metrics from 11 networks to measure social popularity, Red Bull topped the list ahead of arch-rivals Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

The Austrian energy drink company has to thank Felix Baumgartner for its success this week. Fearless Felix’s jump from the edge of space was the talk of the week, and other than real life records, it also broke some social media records. In fact, it was the most-watched live video in YouTube‘s history.

In other findings, Coca-Cola achieved the highest engagement, continuing to pile up Facebook fans — it even doubled first-place Red Bull. The rankings didn’t change since last time apart from Red Bull taking the top spot and Monster overtaking Dr Pepper for the fourth place. The energy drink had a strong week as far as YouTube video views, with more than 300,000, although a far cry from the two soda giants, which both recorded more than one million views.

Unlock the 007 in you. You have 70 seconds!

Wish we could execute such campaigns here in KSA. Due to cultural restrictions and the clients not accepting such ideas is a hassle for all activation agencies in KSA.

So Coke Zero challenged unsuspecting train passengers to unlock the 007 in them for their chance to win exclusive tickets for the new James Bond movie SKYFALL.

However, the tickets weren't free. People had to go the extra mile and unlock their inner 007 in less than 70 seconds to win. One word: Brilliant!

Nike’s Boca Juniors Seismograph

Passion for sport and, in particular, for your favorite team, is something that you feel inside. It’s an emotion that people reveals through choirs, sounds, noise, applauds, jumps, all movements that generate vibrations, vibrations so powerful that one could compare them to earthquakes. Do you think this is a crazy comparison? Well, my friends at Nike Argentina came up with an idea that could make you change your mind. When Boca Junior scores, its supporters generate vibrations like a 6.2 earthquake on a Richter scale.

To prove the comparison, they installed four seismographers at the San Juan Stadium, home of the 2012 Copa Argentina Final, and the data collected, seem to prove the case unequivocally.

I can’t decide whether this project is brilliant or creepy scary (because of what it reveals). For sure I like it because it’s not just a celebration of the victory of the Club, but it’s also a pretty amazing way to pay tribute to the supporters who put so much energy and passion in following Boca Juniors home and away. On the flip side, I don’t know if I would ever dare going to the stadium to support Boca…

BTW have a look at the case study video. It’s very well put together and delivers pretty well the emotions and the “vibrations” of the Boca supporters.

The Evolution of Digital Advertising

How has the advertising industry evolved in the the last 30 years?

PointRoll decided to take a stroll down memory lane, revisiting the history of digital ads.

The relatively recent innovations of the iPhone, iPad and others have created huge opportunities for multimedia and sometimes, entirely new industries. Digital advertising is more powerful now than it ever has been.

Check out the infographic below to see the evolution of digital advertising.

Sony: Silent party

The Sony Walkman is back! And how. In this impressive dancing commercial they are promoting the concept ‘Silent party’. Enjoying and dancing to your music while nobody else can hear what you are listening to.

Jordan Cut Through LA

A web commercial or an art installation? You decide. I just tell you that this is one of the most beautiful advertising ideas I've seen this year. Jordan Brand and Wieden+Kennedy NYC celebrate CP3′s new signature shoe with a “live” frozen moment using a chain of Chris Paul doubles in Venice Beach, California.

Red Bull: Stratos

In October of 2012 (New target launch: 6AM MDT/12PM GMT Sunday October 14th), Felix Baumgartner will attempt a record-breaking freefall jump from 120,000 feet – 36km – above the earth as part of Red Bull Stratos: a mission to the edge of space.

Coca-Cola Vending Machine Rewards You For Dancing

Coca-Cola in Korea have created a vending machine that rewards people the more they dance in front of it!

The Coke dance vending machine has Xbox Kinect technology (sensors and webcams) built in which recognises human interaction. Why? Well, people have the chance to impersonate the Korean boy band 2PM as close as they can, because the better they dance, the more bottles of Coke they are rewarded with!

What I like the most about this is the innovative use of technology to bring fun (and product) to people in an engaging way. And putting Kinect in a vending machine is smart because you are interacting with the brand, having a good time and getting something free for it at the end.

Would you dance for a bottle of Coke like this guy?

Mercedes: Twitter Drive

On Saturday 6 October, people could take part in #YOUDRIVE, a social media first. Using Twitter, they could drive the action of a 3-part story, shown during the commercial break in the X Factor, to introduce the new A-Class.

Google: An Awesome World

Dad (and children’s book author) Dallas Clayton uses the web to share the inspiring book he wrote for his son with people all over the world, and Google Chrome share his story with their newest ad “An Awesome World”.

Bodyform: Truth about Periods

This is just brilliant! Well done from Bodyform, a sanitary napkin brand in the United Kingdom. One of their Facebook fans posted a hilarious comment on the official Facebook page of Bodyform, where he complained that his girlfriend wasn't happy when she had her period. The comment got over 80k likes, and Bodyform decided to answer, with this hilarious video..

Well played Bodyform!
